Missouri vs UMass Prediction: Mizzou’s Calm Before The Storm
© Denny Medley-Imagn Images

Missouri made the trip to Amherst last year to deal with UMass. It was supposed to be a letdown moment just as the SEC season got started, and there wasn’t a problem.

Mizzou won 45-3.

The Tigers got by Auburn the following week, and then came the Alabama game. One 34-0 reality check later, and the season took a slight turn.

This time around, Mizzou gets Alabama at home in two weeks after the UMass game. After that, four of the last six games are on the road with no breaks the rest of the way.

UMass is 0-3 and hasn't beaten an FBS team since late October of 2023. It has just four FBS wins since early November of 2018.

Why UMass Will Win

This is actually a wee bit of a compliment, but UMass is less awful than it was when it got hammered by the Tigers in the middle of last November.

There’s still plenty of work to do, but new head coach Joe Harasymiak’s team has had a few decent moments running the ball, the mistakes aren’t there, and more than anything else, it has nothing to lose here.

Again, Missouri gets Alabama next, and it’s coming off the fun win over South Carolina. This really is a letdown game of massive proportions, and UMass has to take advantage of every moment left of tuning up. But …

Why Missouri Will Win

Okay, fine. UMass isn’t that much better than it was 11 months ago.

There’s no offensive firepower, forget about the offensive line keeping the Tigers out of the backfield, and then there's the biggest problem.

UMass will never have the ball.

It can’t do anything on third downs on either side. Missouri’s biggest positive so far is control. It’s great at moving the chains, third in the nation in third down conversions, and …

UMass Might Never Have the Ball

Missouri is No. 1 in the nation in time of possession.

The offense is clicking, the defense is getting off the field, and overall, the team has control of the ball for over 37 minutes a game.

UMass will put up a few points, but Missouri will load up in the first quarter and coast from there. It’s vacation time, and the entire program will quickly gear up for what’s coming.
