The Navy Midshipmen athletics program and the wider college media world were deeply saddened on Tuesday following news that longtime Navy commentator Pete Medhurst passed away this week at the age of 55.
Medhurst, widely known as the voice of Navy sports, passed away on Monday following a battle with an aggressive form of melanoma cancer. He had to get a brain tumor removed in November and spent his final days alongside family and loved ones.
Taking to social media, Medhurst's wife Brenda said that the family was "heartbroken and devastated" by his loss, but also thankful to have so many family and friends.
“We are heartbroken and devastated. Thank you so much to everyone for their many months of thoughts and prayers for Pete and our family. We are very blessed to have such amazing family and friends. Please continue to keep us in your thoughts and prayers," she said, via the Washington Post.
Naturally, the Navy Midshipmen had a sendoff for Medhurst as well. In a post on X this morning, the school said that he would be missed and offered their condolences to his family.
"Not only was he a great broadcaster, but a friend, father and husband. He touched the lives of so many midshipmen in his 28 years with Navy Athletics. You will be missed," the team said in a statement earlier today.
"Pete - you will be missed. Our hearts go out to you and your family. We hope you find the checkerboard endzone where you're going! #GoNavy | #RollGoats," the school wrote on X a short while ago.

Navy fans, media and even members of the program took to the replies and offered condolences of their own on the crushing passing of Medhurst:
"All of us @wbalradio are heartbroken at the loss of our colleague. He loved what he did and always brought 100%, whether it was @NavyFB , @Ravens , horse racing, coaching or umpiring. Impossible to replace. Our best to Brenda and his 3 children," WBAL's Jeff Wade wrote this morning.
"Mourning the loss of a fantastic human being…both behind the mic & in person #CheckerboardEndZone," Navy assistant Ricky Brown replied.
"Heavy hearts today. Amazing play by play man and an absolutely wonderful person," Navy assistant PJ Volker said.
Our hearts go out to Medhurst's family and loved ones.
