The Dallas Mavericks shocked the NBA world when they won the first overall pick of the 2025 NBA Draft at the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery. The Mavericks are likely to select Duke star Cooper Flagg with the first overall pick.
Flagg, 18, recently traveled to Dallas, Texas, for a private workout with the Mavericks, along with a dinner at the original location of Bob’s Steak and Chop House on Lemmon Avenue.
Furthermore, NBA champion Randy Brown added his opinion to the mix, which will likely sit well with Mavericks fans. Read on for Brown’s opinion.
In a recent interview with Vegas Insider, Randy Brown praised Cooper Flagg and said the Dallas Mavericks and Jason Kidd is the “perfect situation” for the likely first overall pick. Brown added the Mavericks could be a “scary proposition” next year.
When asked where he sat on the Cooper Flagg ceiling debate, Brown responded, “I’ve been around the NBA since 1991, and everybody always has their doubts about draft position every year. I watched Cooper Flagg last summer at USA basketball in Las Vegas, and that was some stiff competition for the kid to go through. He was playing against some stars and some future Hall of Famers, so I think he did pretty well.”
“I think his ceiling is going to be really high. I’m not sure what people have doubts about with him as a player because I think the way he plays is set up for him to be really good in the NBA. I’m looking forward to seeing him in the NBA. I’m assuming he’ll go to the Dallas Mavericks, and they won’t trade away the pick. So, I’m looking forward to seeing him in a Dallas Mavericks uniform, and I think he’ll become a great player in the NBA.”
Randy Brown didn’t stop there. Brown further commented on Cooper Flagg, along with the past and present of the Dallas Mavericks.
When asked if the first overall pick would ease the pressure of the front office from unhappy Mavericks fans, Brown responded, “I think it will take the pressure off a little bit. I actually believe if Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis didn’t get injured before the playoffs, then the Dallas Mavericks were going to be a scary opposition.
“Adding Cooper Flagg to that mix makes them better. I’m not sure what Kyrie Irving’s health will look like for the beginning of the season, but I think the way Dallas plays could be a scary proposition. The way they guard, and they’re an athletic team that gets up and down the floor.”
“Players want to work with Jason Kidd as a coach, so I think this is the perfect situation for a kid like Cooper Flagg to enter the NBA as a rookie.”
Randy Brown has a point to some extent. Cooper Flagg will likely be a “great player” for the Dallas Mavericks. Flagg is a promising NBA prospect widely known for his versatility, defensive instincts, and offensive game.
However, it’s important to remember Flagg hasn’t played in an NBA game yet, and Flagg’s ceiling might not be as high as originally believed — and the pressure to deliver as a key contributor until Kyrie Irving returns can affect the 18-year-old.
