USCHO released its updated college hockey rankings poll following the first week of games.
Despite not playing a regulation game in the opening week of action, Western Michigan received 3 additional first place votes from the prior poll, bringing their total to 32. With a strong opening weekend against Arizona State, the Penn State Nittany Lions picked up an additional first place vote. Boston University also picked up one more vote.
On the other end, Michigan State lost 3 first votes despite not playing a regulation game. The Michigan Wolverines remained steady with 1 first place vote.
With a 4-3 victory over 6th-ranked Boston College, Quinnipiac University soared up the rankings as the only team to gain more than 3 spots. The Bobcats used a balanced attack of four different goal scorers, with most their damage coming in a three-goal second period.
An 18-goal weekend was noticed by the voting committee, as Michigan checked in with the second-largest rise up the rankings. The Wolverines followed up a 11-1 Friday night romp with a Saturday evening 7-0 defeat against Mercyhurst University.
Boston College looked a bit one dimensional, relying on the powerplay for two of their three goals, and failing to generate much offense at 5-on-5. Still, their tough weekend may be more of an indication of the caliber of their competition.
The committee reconsidered their placement of the University of Minnesota after they struggled against Michigan Tech over the weekend. Splitting a two-game set, the Gophers allowed 8 goals to a Huskies team that was projected to finish in the middle of the pack of the CCHA. Still Minnesota showed their offensive firepower by potting 9 goals of their own.
