The New England Patriots biggest need heading into the 2026 NFL Draft is edge rusher. So if they select an edge in round one, who could they target in round two? Alabama receiver Germie Bernard is a very interesting prospect that could make an immediate impact on the Patriots. He is a great athlete and is a very smooth route runner, which is exactly what you want in an NFL receiver. Also if you want a good playmaker, Alabama is usually a pretty good place to look. With that being said, let’s dive into Bernard as a prospect and his fit in New England.
Bernard is a true playmaker, he consistently wins on his routes, and when the ball is in his hands he has the ability to create huge gains. The Josh McDaniels Offense prioritizes guys who can create big plays after the catch, and Bernard does just that. He can line up at any receiver position on the field, which maximizes his potential at the next level. Adding him to a Drake Maye led offense, and allowing him to develop would be very fun to watch. His silky smooth route running and ability after the catch, makes him the perfect match for the Patriots.
The Patriots receiver room could definitely use a playmaker like Bernard. Some people may argue that he has too much overlap with current Patriots receiver Romeo Doubs, but I disagree. I believe Bernard can be used at all receiver positions which gives him the versatility New England could use, and he is also a more dynamic athlete than Doubs. One of the top priorities for an NFL team should be adding good football players to the roster, and Bernard is more than good. A receiver duo of Bernard and current New England receiver Kyle Williams would be fun to imagine for the future in Foxborough. Williams is the speedy downfield threat, while Bernard can be the intermediate yards after catch specialist, giving Drake Maye two weapons to grow with for the foreseeable future.
Bernard is being incredibly overlooked at the moment, and could drop down to the end of the second round. This is perfect for New England since they currently sit at pick sixty-three in the second round. They are in prime position to potentially trade up for the Alabama star, especially if they select in edge rusher in the first round. Don’t count on Bernard falling all the way to sixty-three, so if the Patriots want a chance at a dynamic receiver on day two, they shouldn’t hesitate to be aggressive and go get their guy.
