NFL Scouting Combine: Luke McCaffrey outpaces brother; Frank Gore Jr. ranks RBs; 40-time record broken
Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports

In 2017, San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey showcased his speed at the NFL Scouting Combine by completing the 40-yard dash in 4.48 seconds. Seven years later, his younger brother, former Rice wide receiver Luke McCaffrey, narrowly surpassed Christian's achievement with a 4.47-second run in Indianapolis over the weekend.

Luke hauled in 71 receptions for 992 yards and 13 touchdowns this past season, per Sports Reference, averaging 14.2 yards per catch. Additionally, he carried the ball 15 times for 117 yards, averaging 7.8 yards per carry.

There is no sibling rivalry between the McCaffrey brothers. Christian expressed pride in his younger brother's accomplishment of besting his 40-time.

Luke is among the numerous players who have met with the 49ers at the NFL Scouting Combine. When asked in February about the possibility of being drafted by San Francisco and playing alongside his older brother, Luke stated, "It would be a dream come true."

Luke elaborated, adding, "That's something that, it would really just be an honor, be a blessing. But I'm so excited to go through this process, just working my butt off to make any team that'll take me."

In December, the proud older brother told Bay Area reporters, "I would love to play with him one day. That would be the coolest thing ever. So I'm excited for him and his journey, and he's only going to get better."

Record-breaking 40-time

While Christian McCaffrey celebrated his brother's achievement in the 40-yard dash, it wasn't the most impressive run turned in during the annual scouting event.

On Saturday, former Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy broke the NFL Scouting Combine's record for the fastest 40-yard dash ever recorded, clocking in an impressive 4.21-second time. This surpassed the previous record held by former Cincinnati Bengals and New York Giants wideout John Ross III, who ran a 4.22-second time in 2017.

Frank Gore Jr. ranks all-time best RBs

Former Southern Miss running back Frank Gore Jr. aims to secure a spot on an NFL team in April. He is the son of the 49ers' all-time leading rusher and a current football personnel advisor to the team, Frank Gore Sr.

Gore Jr. accumulated 2,513 rushing yards and 22 total touchdowns in his final two seasons with the Golden Eagles. Additionally, during his senior campaign in 2023, he caught 27 passes for 221 yards and three touchdowns.

Speaking to reporters in Indianapolis over the weekend, Gore Jr. was asked to name his all-time top NFL running backs. Not surprisingly, he began with his father's name. He also mentioned LeSean McCoy, Barry Sanders, and Walter Payton.

The elder Gore amassed 11,073 yards through 10 seasons with San Francisco. His remarkable 16,000 career rushing yards rank third all-time in NFL history, behind only Emmitt Smith (18,355) and Walter Payton (16,726).
