Despite being a smash hit, the Nintendo Switch 2 has been the subject of controversy for its high game prices. As much as people love Mario Kart World, $80 is a steep price tag for a kart racing game. However, now the prices could go up even higher thanks to Trump’s tariff on Japanese imports.
According to The Gamer, Donald Trump’s 25% tariff on imports from Japan could affect Switch 2 game prices. While the tariff shouldn’t affect the price of the Switch 2 itself, since Nintendo’s consoles aren’t made in Japan, the physical game cards are manufactured in Japan and as such, there’s a chance that physical games could see a price increase in the near future. As of the writing of this article, the tariff is supposed to go into effect on August 1st.
Millions of people are still waiting for an opportunity to purchase the Switch 2. It’s hard to imagine the $80 price for the physical version of Mario Kart World getting higher, but hopefully, the price of the Switch 2 bundle that includes a digital download of the game will stay the same. Donkey Kong Bananza, another flagship Nintendo Switch 2 title, will be released on the 17th for $70, another controversial price tag. In addition, since Switch 1 games are also manufactured in Japan, the prices for older original Switch games could also potentially go up, which would undoubtedly cause dissatisfaction with fans.
If you’re interested in the physical version of Donkey Kong Bananza, you might want to preorder it now even if you can’t yet snag a Switch 2. Canadian Nintendo fans are feeling the sting of the tariffs with higher Nintendo Switch Online prices, and the tariffs raised the prices for Nintendo Switch 2 accessories before the console was even out. As the financial climate grows increasingly uncertain, people might grow nostalgic for the days when Mario Kart World only cost $80.
