'Not really, not that much' — Arkansas head coach Dave Van Horn addresses controversial behavior of his starting pitcher in win over Tennessee

Arkansas pitcher Zach Root had an excellent showing on Saturday evening in the Hogs' 4-3 win over the Tennessee Volunteers in the first game of the Fayetteville Super Regional.  The East Carolina transfer held the Vols to 2 earned runs in 7 innings on 95 pitchers, allowing just one hit - a two-run homer by Dean Curley -and striking out six.

Of course, the talk after the game is of something else Root put out on the field - a lot of profanity and over the top antics.  Root was caught on camera twice yelling f bombs at Vols first baseman Andrew Fischer.

Root struck out Fischer in the fourth inning on a full count and appeared to refer to refer to the Vols' slugger by, let's say, another word for a cat along with an f bomb.

Most of us have probably heard as much from time to time in an SEC game.  That's not totally out of line and wasn't a reason alone to give him the boot.  But after inducing an inning-ending double play grounder from Fischer in the sixth inning, Root went nuts, pointing and then screaming "f*ck you" over and again at the Vols' first baseman.  It got to the point that his own players pulled his jersey open while trying to stop him and get him back into the dugout before he got the hook.

His teammates could soon breathe easy, as the tirade didn't result in an ejection or any kind of reprimand for Root from the umpires, but rather a warning was issued to both dugouts.

So, what did Arkansas head coach Dave Van Horn think about the whole thing?  He was asked afterwards by a reporter if he liked seeing that kind of emotion from his starting pitcher, and his answer indicates he didn't exactly approve of Root's behavior.

"Not really, not that much," Van Horn responded. "I want them to stay under control so they can pitch longer. You can only use so much adrenaline. It's going to end up backfiring on you after a while. His stuff was tremendous, and he was just competing like you said. I think probably the crowd got him going a little bit and all that was going on. I liked the fact that he could still throw the ball over the plate and spin it. He did a great job. He gave us seven strong innings."

It certainly didn't backfire on the Razorbacks' starter on Saturday night at least.  Root was able to channel that energy into a sterling performance that carried his team to a narrow victory and put the Hogs on the brink of making it back to Omaha.

Meanwhile, the Vols will turn to their ace on Sunday afternoon when they look to keep their season alive in a do-or-die game two.  Liam Doyle caught some attention himself with the intense manner in which he came in and shut the door on Wake Forest on Monday to win the Knoxville regional.

We'll see if the umpires give Doyle the same ultra-long leash they provided Root on Saturday if Tennessee's ace sees his adrenaline get the better of him in what will be another emotionally charged environment on Sunday.
