Notre Dame has added to its outstanding 2026 class by landing a commitment from Toledo (Ohio) Central Catholic tight end Preston Fryzel. The 6-4, 215-pound pass catcher chose the Irish over Miami (Fla.) and Iowa.
The Fighting Irish got involved with Fryzel much later in the process and didn't offer him a scholarship until May 21st. Two weeks later on June 4th, Fryzel made an unofficial visit to Notre Dame and from that moment on the Irish staff made him a big priority. Notre Dame was able to convince him to quickly schedule that visit and his official visit (June 13-15), which was evidence of the staff ramping things up with Fryzel. He committed to the Notre Dame staff during his official visit and how he's announced that commitment public.
Notre Dame is looking to add at least one movement tight end that can play all over the field. Fryzel certainly fits that mold and in many ways he plays more like a wide receiver than a tight end for Central Catholic. He's an impact pass catcher that can make plays down the field, work the middle of the field and he fits well into Notre Dame's screen game.
His combination of ball skills and speed are quite impressive. Fryzel will need to fill out his 215-pound frame moving forward, but the athletic talent and upside certainly stands out. Fryzel projects to be a pass catcher first and blocker second, so that part of his game will need to improve, but his pass game skills are outstanding.
As a junior, Fryzel caught 43 passes for 807 yards and 10 touchdowns while averaging 18.8 yards per catch. Fryzel caught four passes for 67 yards in the state championship game.
Fryzel had offers from the Fighting Irish, Miami (Fla.), Iowa, Louisville, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Pittsburgh, Kentucky, North Carolina, West Virginia, Minnesota, Duke, Rutgers, Northwestern and Cincinnati.
Fryzel is the 20th player to commit to Notre Dame. He joins Florida quarterback Noah Grubbs, Texas running backs Javian Osborne, Georgia running back Jonaz Walton, Florida wide receiver Dylan Faison, Georgia wide receiver Bubba Frazier, Pennsylvania offensive linemen Tyler Merrill and Grayson McKeogh, Michigan offensive linemen Ben Nichols, Gregory Patrick and Sullivan Garvin, North Carolina ends Ebenezer Ewetade and Rodney Dunham, Texas defensive tackle Tiki Hola, North Carolina linebacker Thomas Davis Jr., Ohio linebacker Jakobe Clapper, Pennsylvania defensive back Joey O'Brien Florida cornerback Ayden Pouncey, Maryland cornerback Khary Adams and Tennessee cornerback Chaston Smith.
