The Oklahoma City Thunder have arguably been the best team in basketball this season and they are currently one of the favorites to win the championship.
After a surprise season last year that saw them finish at the top of the Western Conference standings, the Thunder have picked up right where they left off this season. They currently hold a 44-10 record, which has them once again at the top of the West standings.
Oklahoma City has dominated their way through the season thus far and look like the team to beat in the West.
While the Thunder have had an incredible season, they will have some very important decisions to make in the offseason whether they win the championship or not. Their star point guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is eligible to sign a supermax contract extension in the summer and the Thunder could also look to extend both Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren in the offseason, which will become very expensive for the franchise.
According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, Shai is expected to sign the largest per average contract in NBA history this offseason as the supermax deal would be a four-year, $293 million extension, which would pay him an average salary of $73 million per season.
Marks also pointed out that Shai is eligible to sign the supermax this offseason due to him being named to an All-NBA team in each of the last two seasons. He will also only be able to sign a four-year extension rather than five since he still has two years left on his deal.
Oklahoma City could also sign Holmgren and Williams to an additional $592 million combined extension in the offseason according to Marks.
With these three players all eligible for an extension in the summer, the Thunder’s offseason is set to be quite an expensive one with the three contracts combining to up to $885 million. While that is a ton of money for the franchise to spend, it also locks up their star trio for the foreseeable future as they try to begin a dynasty.
