Oklahoma Sooners did have one bright side to come out of loss to Ole Miss that is set to be huge for their future

The Oklahoma Sooners had some players out this week, as they have more or less for the last two years. This time, maybe the most noticeable guy missing from the starting lineup was right tackle Derek Simmons. He's maybe the best and most consistent guy on the offensive line. With him out and other injuries, true freshman Ryan Fodje was thrust into the starting role at the right tackle spot.

The only concern for Fodje, or the two concerns I should say, is that it was his first career start, and he's an offensive guard playing offensive tackle for the first time. But he played pretty well, despite the Sooners losing to the Ole Miss Rebels on Saturday.

Brent Venables talks Ryan Fodje's first career start in the Sooners' loss to Ole Miss

"I thought he looked good," Venables told reporters after the loss to Ole Miss. "Watching all of it play out, I thought he protected good, and he played with confidence. I didn't see him in there getting exposed necessarily. Anytime you lose a starter, the next guy usually isn't quite as good. But Fodje held up well. I think maybe some of the issues did not seem to have anything to do with that."

For this being Fodje's first start, he played decently well. His name didn't get brought up a ton on the broadcast, other than to mention he was a freshman and it was his first start, which usually means he did pretty well.

Fodje, a former four-star prospect, actually played better than Michael Fasusi did, the five-star true freshman who's made five starts already this season. Fasusi had some bad penalties and even allowed more pressure than Fodje did.

If Fodje looked the way he did on Saturday, all year long, he could be the right tackle of the future for the Sooners. Fasusi hasn't had the best last two games, but it's very obvious that his potential is through the roof. If the Sooners have these two guys and can fix their interior, the offensive line could get scary.
