Oregon vs Liberty Prediction, Preview & Odds: NCAA Tournament First Round
© Robert Goddin-Imagn Images

It’s a long wait to get to the final game of the first round - the world is already diving into John Calipari vs Rick Pitino. But this rematch of the 2024 Fiesta Bowl should be more entertaining than the 45-6 Duck win in that.

Liberty won the Conference USA regular season and tournament titles with a high-powered attack that shoots threes and doesn’t stop. It doesn’t have any size to deal with, but the pace and long bombs make up for it.

Oregon had an up-and-down first year in the Big Ten, but it overcame a rough five-game losing streak to win eight straight before losing to Michigan State in the Big Ten Tournament.

The winner of this gets Arizona or Akron next.

Why Liberty Will Win

Threes, threes, threes. Liberty takes about 27 per game, it makes them around 39% of the time, and they’re great at cranking up the defense from three.

The Flames can get inside, too - they finished sixth in the nation in shooting percentage - but it’s on when the outside shots are dropping.

Oregon is okay at stopping the three, but it’s not elite at it. It’s not used to getting hit with double-digit threes, though - it’ll have to crank up the offense for a full 40 minutes. But …

Why Oregon Will Win

UCLA hit the Ducks with 11 made threes in a win over a month ago. That was the only time in the last 20 games that anyone made double-digit threes on this defense.

And yes, Liberty is great at getting to the rim and scoring in bunches, too - it was able to beat Kansas State. But it’s about to deal with size on the interior.

The Flames have really quick, really small guards, a big 6-8, 230-pound pounder in Own Aquino, and that’s about it.

7-0 Nathan Bittle is the main man for Oregon, and there are plenty of options off the bench to keep handling anything Liberty does inside.

Oregon vs Liberty: Who Will Win?

It’ll be a home crowd in Seattle - the Duck fans will make the trip - and Liberty has to take it out of the picture right away.

It’ll hit its share of outside shots, but this isn’t Conference USA. The Oregon offense will keep up in a variety of ways - it’ll hit from three, too.

It’ll be fun, with the points and offense enough to keep you awake in a wild way to end the first round.
