The Green Bay Packers have addressed their need at receiver in overwhelming fashion. After using their first-round pick on Texas receiver Matthew Golden, they drafted TCU receiver Savion Williams in the third round of the NFL Draft on Friday night.
The Packers have used all three of their picks on offensive players, with offensive tackle Anthony Belton in the second round.
At almost 6-foot-4 and 222 pounds, Williams wasn’t just a receiver. He was used frequently as a runner for the Horned Frogs in a wildcat-quarterback role. In 12 games, he had 933 total yards and 12 total touchdowns on offense. He’s earned comparisons to Cordarrelle Patterson as a receiver, runner and returner.
“Very versatile,” he described his game during a Zoom with Packers beat reporters. “Everything that my team needs me to do, I’m doing.”

With Golden and Williams, the Packers have addressed their need for a deep threat as Christian Watson returns from a torn ACL. Plus, Watson and Romeo Doubs will be free agents after the upcoming season, so Golden and Williams will help ensure the receiver room is well-stocked.
As was the case with Golden and Belton, Williams said he had a predraft visit with the Packers.
He said most teams view him as a receiver but like the fact they can use him in different roles.
Despite an all-world skill-set, his only 100-yard receiving game came against Texas, though he destroyed the Longhorns with 11 catches for 164 yards in that game in 2023.
However, his ability to impact games as a runner, receiver and returner could make him an asset for coach Matt LaFleur in a gadget role that perhaps can be expanded in time.
“I love blocking, that’s my main game,” Williams said. “When I was in high school when it comes to blocking, it was fun. I like blocking a lot.”
Williams played quarterback as a kid so grew up watching Johnny Manziel. Since he became a receiver, DK Metcalf is the receiver he likes to watch.

Measurables: 6-foot-3 7/8, 222 pounds. 10 1/4-inch hands. 4.48 40.
Relative Athletic Score: Not enough testing.
By the Numbers: In five seasons, Williams caught 127 passes for 1,665 yards and 14 touchdowns. Most of that production came over his final three seasons, including career highs of 60 catches, 611 yards and six touchdowns in 2024, when he also carried the rock 51 times for 322 yards and six more touchdowns.
“I just believe in Savion so much,” TCU quarterback Josh Hoover said. “He’s a guy that feeds off getting targeted, the more you target him the better he gets. I just knew for us to be successful I had to get the ball in No. 3’s hands. If 3 has the ball in his hands good things happen.”
According to Pro Football Focus, 118 FBS-level, draft-eligible receivers were targeted at least 55 times. He ranked 20th in yards after the catch per catch (6.9), 103rd in drop rate (11.8 percent) and 17th in forced missed tackles (18). He caught 3-of-8 deep passes with all three going for touchdowns.
“I think everybody understands you have a uniquely talented guy just from size and ability to make plays and strength and speed,” TCU coach Sonny Dykes said. He did at times, but the great ones do it every day.”
Williams averaged 22.3 yards per kickoff return in 2020.
NFL.com said: Lance Zierlein compared him to Cordarrelle Patterson. “Developmental wideout who offers an alluring blend of physical gifts and untapped potential. Williams is big, strong and fast but very raw as a route-runner and is unreliable with his hands. His production is uneven as a traditional wideout, but he adds a dynamic kick to the offense as a gadget runner and as a catch-and-run option.”
Noteworthy: Williams’ daughter, Legacy, was born six weeks premature. “She had to stay in the NICU for about 17 weeks,” he told the campus magazine. “First, she had a valve problem. She had to get surgery the day after she was born. We already knew about her heart problem. We were really just trying to get her bigger in the NICU, getting her eating, because she just had the tummy surgery. We just needed to get weight on her so she could start getting ready for her heart surgery.”
Legacy, obviously, is his motivation. “On the field, (Legacy) helps me a lot, because if something doesn't go my way, and I think about getting down on myself, I can think about my daughter,” he said.
