On Thursday, the Texas Tech Red Raiders made a huge splash in the 2027 recruiting class, landing EDGE LaDamion Guyton. The news eventually even caught the attention of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Before completely taking over the NFL, Mahomes was a star with the Red Raiders for three seasons (2014-16), completing 857-of-1,349 passes for 11,252 yards (third in school history), 93 touchdowns (third in school history), 29 interceptions and a 152 passing efficiency rating.
Bringing in Guyton is a huge deal, as Rivals places him as a five-star recruit and the No. 1 player in the nation. Last season for Savannah Christian High School, he racked up 52 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks and two fumble recoveries.
The exciting addition quickly earned a reaction from Mahomes, who responded to the news by posting a GIF of the Masked Raider, the school's primary mascot, riding his horse onto Jones AT&T Stadium.

However, Texas Tech may need to be shelling out quite the paycheck for Guyton, with Rivals' Pete Nakos also reporting that the pass rusher is expected to make $900,000 as just a freshman in college.
Considering Mahomes is establishing himself as one of the best players in NFL history at just 29 years old, already winning three Super Bowls, it's no surprise that Texas Tech would utilize him when recruiting players.
It's not as though the two-time MVP plays a huge role, but Red Raiders head coach Joey McGuire did reveal that he's asked Mahomes to take phone calls with players taking visits in Lubbock.
“I will text him and say, ‘Hey, man, I’m gonna have so and so on campus.' You know, let’s say he’s a quarterback in 2026. 'Tell me a time that I can get on the phone with you and you can just say hello,'" McGuire said.
