FOXBOROUGH, Mass - "For Welles"
That was on the back of every Boston College football player's jersey on Saturday night during their annual Red Bandanna Game, which honors Welles Crowther, a former BC lacrosse player who died saving lives on Sept. 11, 2001.
Two Patriots rookies made the trip to Chestnut Hill during their weekend off to watch this impactful game, and spoke with A to Z Sports about the experience.
"It was a pretty cool environment," tackle Caedan Wallace said. "It was cool to see their tradition that they do there. Was all around a cool experience."
"It was really awesome," he added. "I didn't know too much about it until I got out there, and so kind of hearing the story behind it and the meaning behind it was really awesome."
Wallace was joined by Dell Pettus, who actually has a connection to one of the BC coaches.
"I got an opportunity to go just because, Ray Brown, he's the secondary coach for BC, he used to be one of my coaches at Troy. So I thought it was a good opportunity just having some off time to be able to go into the city and support one of the local teams," Pettus explained.
"I thought the environment was great, honestly."
And it was incredible game to be at as the Eagles defeated Michigan State, 23-19.
"I thought it was a great time. "I'm happy that they won, that they got to pull it out. It was a great game," Pettus added. "It got like really good in the second half. So I thought it was awesome. Had a great time."
BC's head coach is former Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien.
"I didn't get to meet him, but hopefully I'll get to go back and see him again," Pettus said.
