ESPN draft expert Jonathan Givony believes the Philadelphia 76ers are on course to take VJ Edgecombe with the third overall pick in this summer’s NBA Draft.
For a while, many thought the Philadelphia 76ers would choose Ace Bailey. However, the Rutgers guard cancelled his pre-draft workout and interview, causing the team to reportedly feel disenchanted about drafting him.
“That’s the intel that we’re receiving at this moment. VJ Edgecombe impressed the Philadelphia 76ers in his visit and workout last week. He met with the front office, ownership. He spent some time with Tyrese Maxey,” Givony detailed.
“It looks like he’s got a clear runway there at three. Ace Bailey has had a workout scheduled in Philadelphia, canceled it, and is really sending signals that he does not wanna be there in Philadelphia. The gap between three and four talent-wise has never been that considerable, so that could ultimately put VJ Edgecombe in the driver’s seat to be the number three pick, but it’s still very much up in the air. We’re hearing some trade talk at that pick. I wouldn’t take that quite to the bank just yet,” he added.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro recently campaigned for the Philadelphia 76ers to avoid selecting Ace Bailey with the third overall pick because of his unwillingness to appear in the team’s pre-draft workout and interview.
“I am worried about that. If you’re not coming to workout, then you got something wrong here (in your head). I’ve already sent (the 76ers) a message about that,” Shapiro said via Kyle Pagan on X (formerly known as Twitter).
Shapiro seems open about the idea of taking VJ Edgecombe because of his intriguing fit with Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Paul George, and incoming sophomore Jared McCain. In his lone season at Baylor, Edgecombe averaged 15.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 2.1 steals per contest.
