NAME: Papa Amadou Kante

HOMETOWN: Dakar, Senegal

POSITION: Forward

YEAR: Redshirt Freshman

HEIGHT: 6’10

WEIGHT: 235 LBs

HEAR FROM KANTE:

Kante recently addressed the local media, including Pittsburgh Sports Now.

“I’m getting better, stronger than I thought I would be,” Kante said ten days ago. “I’m glad that I went through this [injury] because this made me stronger… Now I’m trying to focus on the next thing, like, every day, trying to get better and get healthy. The most important thing for me right now is trying to be healthy. Not think about what happened last year, but just take it as motivation going into the season because I know I missed one year, but for one year for me, I learned so much during that one year and I’m so grateful that happened to me right now. There’s just no better people that I could go through this with than the coaching staff, the training, DA [Daniel Anthony] and all those people around. Everyone makes it so easy for me, so every day, nothing changed, I just got better and better and in my mind I’m the old Papa…”

NEWS

Kante, a 6-foot-10, four-star redshirt freshman big man, was one of the best prospects that Capel has brought into Pitt at the time of his pledge. The Senegal native moved to the United States in 2019, and quickly burst onto the recruiting scene with a strong high-school career at South Kent School (CT).

Preparing for his freshman year last season, Kante injured his knee, requiring surgery. He missed the entire 2023-24 season.
