PJ Haggerty’s Sunflower Showdown Status in Question

The Kansas State Wildcats could be without their biggest offensive weapon when they close the regular season against their in-state rival.

According to interim head coach Matthew Driscoll, Wildcats star PJ Haggerty practiced yesterday but remains a game-time decision for Kansas State’s matchup with the Kansas Jayhawks. Haggerty did not play in the Wildcats’ previous game due to an undisclosed issue.

Simply put: Kansas State needs him.

Haggerty has been the offensive engine for the Wildcats all season long, averaging 23.3 points per game, one of the top scoring marks in the country. His ability to create his own shot, attack off the dribble, and generate offense late in the shot clock has been central to nearly everything Kansas State does offensively.

Without him in the lineup, that scoring burden becomes extremely difficult to replace.

The timing of the injury concern also couldn’t be much tougher. Kansas State closes the regular season on the road at Allen Fieldhouse, widely regarded as one of the most difficult places to play in college basketball. The Jayhawks are headed for the NCAA Tournament, while K-State is not. Don’t let that fool you, though. Both teams want to crush the other in this one.

Even with limited postseason implications for the Wildcats, the rivalry element of the Sunflower Showdown ensures the game carries significant pride and bragging rights. These matchups between Kansas and Kansas State rarely lack intensity, regardless of where the teams sit in the standings.

But realistically, Haggerty’s presence could be the difference between Kansas State staying competitive and the game getting away early.

If the standout guard is cleared to play, the Wildcats will at least bring their top scorer into the matchup and give themselves a chance to keep pace offensively. If not, Kansas State may be forced to rely heavily on role players to fill a massive scoring void in one of the toughest arenas in the sport.

Either way, Haggerty’s status will be one of the biggest storylines to watch leading up to tip-off in Lawrence.
