Of course the Big Ten team is supposed to beat Ball State and an FCS team, so starting 2-0 should be hailed as any sort of a big deal. But when you’re Purdue, and you’re coming off a 1-11 season, winning two games before the first week of September is over would be a big deal.
The Boilermakers got the Barry Odom era off to a hot start, blowing out Ball State 31-0 in a breeze of a performance. Win this, and it’ll be just the third time since 2007 that the program will begin a season with two wins.
Southern Illinois went 4-8 last year, but it wasn’t all that bad. There wasn’t any problem with Thomas More College winning 49-3 in the opener.

Week 2 Big Game Expert Picks
Purdue is still trying to get all of the pieces together.
It might have dialed up the defense against Ball State, but the running game never found much of a groove. There were a few okay runs, but the line didn’t generate enough of a push - the Boilermakers averaged just 3.1 yards per carry.
The Salukis should be able to run well at times. They’ll grind more than flash, but …
Purdue dialed up the pressure right out of the gate.
Barry Odom is the head coach - his teams will always bring a killer defense. Again, it was just Ball State, but the Boilermaker defensive front got its DoorDash order delivered in the Cardinal backfield.
Purdue will make SIU throw. It won’t always work, but the defensive attacking style should make up for a few mistakes here and there.
The Boilermaker defense will look to make another statement.
After a disastrous 2024, there’s a real shot Purdue could at least be tied for the best scoring defense in the nation. It’ll be another crisp win before USC comes to town.
Purdue 41, Southern Illinois 6
