The Las Vegas Raiders wasted no time shuffling around their backfield after selecting Boise State star Ashton Jeanty with the No. 6 overall pick.
The Raiders were considered one of the favorites to land Jeanty in this year's draft. After all, general manager John Spytek admit earlier this offseason that his son wanted him to draft the Heisman Trophy finalist.
Jeanty joins a backfield in Las Vegas that includes Raheem Mostert and Zamir White. We've seen Mostert have over 1,000 rushing yards in a single season, but there are concerns about his health. As for White, he averaged just 2.8 yards per carry for the Raiders in 2024.
One running back who won't be an option for the Raiders this fall is Isaiah Spiller.
On Friday afternoon, Spiller was released by the Raiders. He signed a reserves/future contract with the franchise in January. Clearly, the front office thought he was expendable.
Spiller, a former fourth-round pick from Texas A&M, started his NFL career with the Los Angeles Chargers. He had just 137 rushing yards and 47 receiving yards during a two-year stretch.
Unfortunately for Spiller, this year's draft class is pretty loaded at running back. Teams will probably consider taking a rookie before signing him to a deal.
As for the Raiders, it's obvious they're confident about the guys they have in the building - and rightfully so. Jeanty was undoubtedly the No. 1 running back in this year's class. In his final season of college football, he had 2,497 yards and 29 touchdowns on 344 carries.
There's no question Jeanty will get the bulk of the carries in Las Vegas.
