Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders famously fell to the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft , and recent reports indicate that he and his father, Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, were picky with potential landing spots. Earlier in the week, reports revealed the Baltimore Ravens planned to draft him with their fifth-round selection, but passed when Sanders said he’d rather play on a team with a quicker path to playing time. However, the Ravens weren’t the only team to reach out during the NFL Draft.
In a recent comment, Deion Sanders also said that the Philadelphia Eagles also made contact with the Colorado quarterback during the event. Obviously, this didn’t amount to anything, but it creates an interesting hypothetical.
Jalen Hurts is atop Philadelphia’s depth chart, which means Sanders would never have seen the field without an injury. This may be the reason why the Eagles didn’t draft him, as the quarterback preferred the Browns due to the lack of competition at the quarterback position.
However, in an ironic twist of fate, Sanders would probably be closer to the field had the Eagles selected him. Former sixth-round pick Tanner McKee suffered a finger injury in the preseason, forcing the team to trade for Minnesota Vikings backup Sam Howell. This probably wouldn’t have happened if Sanders were on the roster, which means he’d probably be the primary backup, at least for the short term.
As things currently stand, Shedeur Sanders is Cleveland’s third-string quarterback. Veteran Joe Flacco has guided the team to a 1-2 start, while third-round rookie Dillon Gabriel is the primary backup. The team also has veteran Bailey Zappe on the practice squad.
