Texas men's basketball is reportedly on the verge of a major hire.
If you can't beat them, have them join you. That appears to be the strategy of the University of Texas as it targets a replacement for Rodney Terry, who was let go on Sunday after two-plus seasons in charge. According to a new report from Cedric Golden of the Austin American-Statesman, the Longhorns are working to hire Xavier's Sean Miller.
"Sean Miller will be hired as the new head basketball coach at the University of Texas, a high ranking official told the Austin American-Statesman Sunday," Golden tweeted this afternoon.
Of course, Miller is currently the head coach at Xavier, and just beat Texas in the First Four Wednesday night in Dayton in Terry's final game as UT's head coach.
Miller had been linked to the Texas job over the last few days--there were actually some whispers about him replacing Terry before the teams tipped off last week--but this is the first news of a deal being on the way.
In three seasons in what was his second stint at Xavier, Miller went 65-40 with two trips to the NCAA Tournament and one berth in the NIT. He led the Musketeers to the Sweet 16 in 2023.
Miller previously took Xavier to four NCAA Tournaments in five years, including one Elite Eight and another Sweet 16, from 2005-09. After that, he moved on to Arizona, where Miller went 302-109 with four Elite Eights in 12 seasons.
Texas reached the Elite Eight under Terry, then the interim head coach, in 2023, but failed to achieve the same level of success in his two seasons as the program's full-time leader.
"This was a very difficult decision and one that we put a great deal of thought, consideration and discussion into as we evaluated where we are as a men's basketball program," Texas AD Chris Del Conte said in a statement.
