Ronda Rousey has pulled no punches when it comes to airing her grievances about working in WWE. This week, that included a confession of sorts. Rousey admitted that she refused to tap out to the armbar when feuding with Becky Lynch, and perhaps somewhat surprisingly, there appear to be as many fans backing that refusal as there are those who think refusing to do business was the wrong decision.
Speaking on The Lapsed Fan, Rousey revealed that she refused to tap to Lynch's submission finisher when asked, telling WWE higher-ups that her mother would disown me if she were ever to tap out. Rousey compares it to refusing to tap to submissions while fighting in UFC, noting she would rather let her opponent dislocate her arm than tap to an armbar.
"That’s why my ligaments are all f**ked up in this arm. So, I’m not gonna do it," Rousey said. "Anytime anyone ever choked me out in competition, I just went out, and I don’t tap. I don’t tap motherf**ker. That’s how it is." Considering some of the other things Rousey has said about her time in WWE, you'd think fans would be coming after her following those comments. The consensus on refusing to tap to Lynch appears to be pretty split, though.
Around half of the responses to Rousey's confession on social media are noting that there's nothing wrong with a wrestler trying to protect their character, particularly if it's something they wouldn't do in real life. The best pro wrestlers are those who take their personalities and turn them up to full volume, so with that in mind, refusing to do something because you wouldn't do that outside of wrestling makes a lot of sense.
There are, of course, also fans who aren't on Rousey's side. Most of the counterpoints to Rousey highlight that, while there's a lot of crossover, pro wrestling and MMA are very different. Pro wrestling is staged, and even though Rousey would have tapped out, she wouldn't have been doing it because she was in too much pain. She'd have been tapping out because she was asked, and to help further the story being told between her and Lynch.
Rousey has also taken aim at her rivalry with Alexa Bliss this week, criticizing WWE for making her feud with Bliss simply because Bliss was the top merch seller in the company. Again, a fundamental misunderstanding of how pro wrestling works, something MJF pointed out in his reply to Rousey's comments.
