Rory McIlroy Trolls Maple Leafs Following Emotional Masters Triumph

PGA Tour Grand Slam Champion golfer and Maple Leafs fan Rory McIlroy poked a bit of fun at his favorite team after receiving a jersey from MLSE CEO Keith Pelley.

Known for his sweet swing and laundry list of accomplishments, Rory McIlroy has a soft spot for the Maple Leafs, often remarking them as 'his team'.

Rory McIlroy believes if he can win The Masters; the Leafs can win the Cup

But his team fell short of their championship hopes this season, and while McIlroy is probably used to the heartbreak by now, he had some inspirational words for the team after receiving a Maple Leafs sweater from MLSE CEO Keith Pelley:

If I can win the Masters, then the Leafs can win the Stanley Cup.

While he was certainly a bit self-deprecating towards his own abilities, McIlroy has the passion and belief that the Maple Leafs can make a run, though if this year wasn't the one, it's hard to know when McIlroy thinks they'll take off.

McIlroy is no stranger to Canada either, winning the RBC Canadian Open twice.

If Rory can do it, why not Toronto?

It seemed like the fairytale ending for McIlroy, who ended up securing the green jacket and cementing himself as one of the greatest golfers of the modern era.

But another storybook ending that needs to be written is that of the Maple Leafs' Stanley Cup journey. It's been a long, long time since the team has found success, and while this season seemed to be as good as ever to be the one; it wasn't meant to be.

But just like McIlroy's quest for golf supremacy, he had to struggle, he had to persevere, and he needed to make sure that he felt the lows before reaching the highs.

It's something the Maple Leafs could end up taking a bit of inspiration from. They are in the middle of changing the way things have been done for a decade; but given enough time they might be able to finish their final chapter after all.
