With Ryan Garcia currently focused on his February 21 fight against WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios, his father and trainer, Henry Garcia, is already looking to Shakur Stevenson

Henry has opened the door to a massive clash with Shakur, stating that the fight is feasible at junior welterweight. While “KingRy” is currently campaigning at 147 lbs, Henry insists that the move isn’t necessarily permanent. He provided a glimpse into Ryan’s current conditioning to prove that a return to 140 lbs remains a viable option.

Garcia’s State

Ryan stepped on the scale at 151 lbs last week. Henry believes this weight gives them the “sweet spot” to fluctuate comfortably between the junior welterweight and welterweight divisions. Despite the recent jump in weight class, the camp believes Ryan hasn’t outgrown the 140-lb limit just yet.

A major sticking point in Stevenson’s previous negotiations has been his insistence on 10-pound rehydration clauses for opponents to meet him at 147. Henry Garcia is looking to remove that hurdle entirely to ensure the fight happens.

Will It Happen?

“I’m going to tell you again, if you want me to come to 147lbs, I am coming there with a rehydration clause. I don’t even do that, but why am I going up to these guys’ weight classes if I am not planning on going there [permanently]. So any of y’all, you wanna fight me at 147lbs? 10 pounds [is the max you can rehydrate],” Stevenson stated

“Without a rehydration clause, there’s a strong possibility that we could drop down to 140 with no problem. Absolutely,” Henry said

Shakur is coming off a unanimous decision win over Teofimo Lopez, which secured him the WBO belt at 140. The win made him a four-weight world champion. The WBC in response stripped Shakur of his belt at 135, as his future at lightweight looks to be over. Shakur must now decide if he wants to stay at 140 or move to 147, with Garcia a potential name later down the line. However, Conor Benn is also an options since the two faced off in the ring after Shakur beat Lopez.

Alternatives

“Where’s Conor Benn? Hey, Conor Benn – we can get it bangin’, boy. I want that same rehydration clause that you put on [Chris] Eubank Jnr, and we can fight. Sign the contract. Sign the contract,” Shakur

“You’re too small for me, boy. You’re tiny, bro. You can’t punch, you can’t keep me off you. I’ll f**k you up. I’ll put you down,” Benn
