Germie Bernard was one of the few bright spots on the Alabama football offense against Florida State, and he is now being looked at as the golden standard for the Crimson Tide’s wide receivers, according to offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb.

“How I look at it, I just start with Germie Bernard,” Grubb said Monday in Alabama football’s press conference to reporters. “That’s what it’s supposed to look like. And if you’re watching the game, I mean, the guy’s running in and blocking their Aztec player that’s running down the middle of the field and smoking that dude. Then he’s running down the sideline and catching a play-action pass. His desire and passion for the game, you just see how he plays, whether it’s a run block or a pass play. We just set that as the gold standard, and if it’s not what Germ’s doing, it’s not good enough.”

Bernard had a stellar performance to open up his senior campaign for Crimson Tide, reeling in a career-high eight receptions for 146 yards against the Seminoles’ secondary. The senior wideout continues to lead by example in practice. Bernard made this apparent when speaking to reporters on Tuesday.

“It starts at practice,” Bernard said. “You can’t do it in the game if you don’t do it in practice. Like, you really really gotta push yourself beyond your comfortability. You’ve gotta get uncomfortable in practice, on the hot days when it’s hot and you get tired you’ve gotta push through that mental barrier. Then you’ve gotta go find what’s deep inside of you. You know what I’m saying, you gotta bring that animal out of you.”

Bernard looks to continue to lead by example in mentality and on the gridiron as Alabama football looks to bounce back.
