Snoop Dogg will produce an NFL talent during this draft weekend. "Coach Snoop" shouted out this former USC star ahead of night one of the 2025 NFL Draft.
The legendary rapper/actor/entrepreneur spoke glowingly and emotionally about Jaylin Smith while on ESPN's "First Take" Wednesday. Smith emerged as Snoop's workhorse running back during his youth football years. The Trojans defensive back became known as "J-Rock" and became a feature subject on the Netflix docuseries "Coach Snoop."
Smith's YFL coach nearly shed tears reflecting on the journey of his past RB.
"I’m so happy for J-Rock, he worked his tail off,” Snoop Dogg said. "He played for me when he wasn’t supposed to play for me, meaning his age was a level lower but he wanted to play on my team with the older kids and he excelled. He did all the things he needed to do to excel on and off the field."
The Palmdale native Smith not only bet on himself at that age, but overcame personal grief while on his journey to USC, then the league.
"He lost his mother, and he was able to push through and his father supported him and just watching him graduate and become a great football player and a great kid … I’m just so happy for J-Rock because if you watch the Netflix special, you see a kid that was trying to figure it out and now you are watching a young adult that has figured it out," Snoop Dogg shared.
Smith was also raised by his grandfather during his youth football years. He signed with USC for its 2021 class.
Smith never left for the NCAA transfer portal even after a coaching change in 2022. Smith thrived as a versatile DB under head coach Lincoln Riley. He's also graduating with a communications degree before his NFL career begins.
He went on to break up five passes and pick off three interceptions during his career. Smith is projected to land on day two of the draft, as he's earned a third round grade.
Snoop's youth football league, meanwhile, will deliver one more alum who made it to the league. Past SYFL players who went on to play in the NFL include JuJu Smith-Schuster, John Ross, Keisean Nixon, Romeo Doubs, Deommodore Lenoir, and 2023 NFL Rookie of the Year C.J. Stroud.
