Who would have thought that politics and video games would be in the news as much as they have been this year? Stonemaier Games is about to add its own two cents to the discussion. Many gaming studios have laid off many of their employees due to financial problems, including President Trump’s tariffs on many countries. This is an unprecedented situation that we could not have seen last year going into this year. Imagine having a Bingo card for all of your gaming wishes and expectations. Would you have a spot that states anything in regards to political things affecting the gaming industry? Stonemaier Games is going to do something unheard of in the gaming world.

What Triggered the Legal Fight

Stonemaier Games is suing the president of the United States (Trump) because of the tariffs. They are now facing a $14.50 tariff tax for every $10 that they spend on manufacturing with their partner in China. That’s a lot of money to pay for a company that has 8 employees, all based in the US with the company. At the moment, Stonemaier Games is projecting $1.5 million in tariff payments alone. That’s a pretty hefty bill for a small company to pay for and ensure that their employees are supported in the best way possible. It is amazing to hear that they are concerned about the livelihood of their employees.

Others Caught In The Battle

Four months into the year, there has been a mix of the two, starting with the tariffs affecting production of Nintendo’s new game console, the Switch 2. It is safe to say that if Nintendo has to pay more for distribution, then somewhere along the lines, prices for consumers will increase. At the current moment, Nintendo is not raising the prices of their Switch 2, however, the game prices seem to be increasing, which has gamers questioning if they even want to buy the Switch 2 right now.

Why The Matters

Stonemaier Games currently has annual sales of around 35% to consumers, stores, and distributors located outside of the United States. From the official news that they have released so far, it is amazing to see that they are trying their absolute best to keep business going as best as they can. However, with the US imposing 145% tariffs on all exports from China, only time will show how they will endure this storm.

What This Means for the Industry

How do you see this going for Stonemaier Games and the gaming industry in general? Could there be more layoffs affecting gaming studios and their employees? Will there be an end to all of this chaos sooner rather than later? As gamers, we understand that life happens, and gaming companies are affected as well as many people individually. The status of how the gaming world in general will survive this is another speculation to keep in mind.
