The Sugar Bowl, scheduled to be played tonight, has been postponed.
The game is being pushed back following this morning's truck attack in New Orleans. Ten people were killed and dozens more were injured when a man drove a truck into a crowd assembled in the French Quarter in what authorities believe was a terrorist attack. The suspect, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42, of Texas, was killed by police in a firefight around 3:15 a.m.
"An Islamic State group flag was recovered in the vehicle used by the attacker who killed at least 10 people early Wednesday in New Orleans, the FBI said in a statement," writes the Associated Press. "The FBI says it is still investigating the attacker, identified as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a U.S. citizen from Texas, to determine 'potential associations and affiliations with terrorist organizations.'”
There have been multiple reports regarding when the Sugar Bowl will be rescheduled, and Sugar Bowl CEO Jeff Hundley announced moments ago that the matchup between Georgia and Notre Dame has been postponed "for 24 hours."
That means that, as of now, the Bulldogs and Fighting Irish will kick off at 8:45 p.m. ET tomorrow night from the Caesars Superdome.
Of course, there remains an active terror investigation into this morning's attack, so it is possible that the game is pushed back further if necessary.
Hopefully, that doesn't have to happen, but the safety of the public, as well as those attending participating in the Sugar Bowl, is paramount to playing the game.
A University of Georgia student was "critically injured" in the attack, university president Jere W. Morehead announced Wednesday afternoon.
"I have spoken to the student’s family and shared my concern, support and well wishes on behalf of the entire UGA community," Morehead wrote. "I would like to express my gratitude to all the first responders who moved so quickly to help those affected by this senseless act of violence, as well as to the medical personnel who are caring for the injured."
We will continue to provide information on this situation as it becomes available.
