Following the passing of award-winning actor and director Robert Redford, Sundance Mountain Resort will hold a chairlift light vigil in his honor.

Redford, who passed away on Tuesday, September 16, 2025 at 89-year-old, was the founder of Sundance Mountain Resort after he purchased the resort land in 1968. Redford owned the resort until 2020 and left a legacy of conservation and love for skiing. In 2015, Sundance replaced their old Arrowhead triple chair with a quad dubbed 'Red's Lift' in his honor.

Redford also founded the Sundance Institute, Sundance Film Festival, and Sundance Nature Alliance in his lifetime and time in Provo, Utah.

Sundance will host a 'Chairlift Light Vigil' in Redford's honor and to celebrate his life on September 18, 2025, from 8-10 p.m.

Guests will be given battery-powered candles to ride the Outlaw Express, free of charge. A minimum suggested donation of $5 is encouraged and proceeds will go to the Sundance Nature Alliance.

The Sundance Nature Alliance (SNA) works to protect and preserve the land and watershed in the North Fork of Provo Canyon. Land stewardship through art and nature is one of the organization's pillars, in honor of Redford's legacy. SNA also helps to conserve and create climate resilient landscapes by helping to restore streams, wetlands, and native plant communities.

"With his generous spirit, kind nature, and artistic vision, Bob created something no one else could have built. Always looking ahead, his commitment to this canyon was a calling that went beyond love. The Sundance brand he built – rooted in this place – has touched so many lives and will continue to benefit generations who love this preserved land.”
said Chad Linebaugh, President and General Manager of Sundance Mountain Resort in a social media post from the resort on Redford's passing.

Sundance Mountain Resort has also created a temporary memorial in the Resort Village at the Rehearsal Hall Pond and guests are invited to pay their respects to Redford.
