Sweepstakes Casino Games Under the Microscope in West Virginia, Other States

In West Virginia, you can choose between real money and sweepstakes online casinos. Each offers a unique experience.

Sweepstakes casinos are very popular, but work differently and aren’t as tightly regulated. It appears that West Virginia Attorney General John B. McCuskey wants that to change.

According to a report by iGaming Business, sources told Casino Reports that he subpoenaed “sweepstakes” gaming operators. IGB reports that “There is little information available beyond that.”

West Virginia law does not allow the attorney general to publish the subpoenas. The attorney general can only comment on them after receiving a response from one of the operators.

High 5 Casino Ceases Operations in West Virginia

But a recent move by one of the major players in the sweepstakes casino industry may confirm it. As of 18 February 2025, High 5 Casino has stopped accepting new sweepstakes players and purchases in six states, including West Virginia. Here’s the complete list:

New Jersey
Pennsylvania
Rhode Island
West Virginia

The closures come on the heels of the company’s decision to shut down in Canadian-regulated markets, as well.

Other States Making Similar Moves

Last week, the Mississippi Senate unanimously decided to ban certain online gaming platforms known as sweepstakes casinos.

Senate Bill 2510 seeks to stop these casinos from operating across the state. While the bill doesn’t clearly define sweepstakes casinos, it includes them with any online or computerized gambling games.

Mississippi isn’t the first state to attempt banning these casinos; similar bills have been proposed in Connecticut, Maryland, New Jersey, and New York.
