Last Saturday during the High Limit Gold Cup Race of Champions Silver Dollar Speedway, Chase Johnson was seriously injured. The driver was hospitalized following a wreck in the weekend’s big race.
Following the violent wreck, Chase Johnson was transported to UC Davis Medical Center in the Intensive Care Unit. The 28-year-old has gone through a lot since arriving at the hospital with another update coming from his race team today.
Earlier in the week, Johnson underwent surgery to fix multiple fractures in his back. The update given this morning was unfortunately not a positive one. However, fans, friends and family, and the racing community are keeping Johnson in their thoughts and prayers.
“Today was definitely one of the toughest,” the driver’s team Facebook page posted. “Unfortunately, he did start getting pneumonia yesterday and has been fighting it ever since. Today he worked so hard on his breathing to try help his oxygen saturation and carbon dioxide level. He fought so incredibly hard, but the pneumonia persisted. He quickly got a fever and breathing became increasingly harder.
“At the end of the night, the best option for Chase was to be intubated with a breathing tube and feeding tube. This will hopefully help him get rest overnight. We will see where tomorrow goes.
“Please continue to pray, wish, and believe in him as he is fighting so hard. He needs all of the love and support everyone has been giving.”
The sprint car community is tight-knit. There has been an outpouring of support for Chase Johnson and his family in the days following the wreck.
During the aftermath of the wreck, FloRacing has provided multiple updates on the driver. Chase Johnson has undergone a lot and it appears there will be more in the coming days.
On Sunday, Johnson underwent a nine-hour surgery to repair his C4, C5, and C6 vertebrae. There were still other fractures in his spine that had to be attended to, but stabilizing the driver was the most important thing.
During the race, Johnson started P10 and was running seventh when he was involved in the Lap 13 wreck. He was extracted from his vehicle and flown to UC Davis Medical Center via helicopter. Johnson was making his High Limit Racing debut during the Silver Dollar Speedway weekend.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Chase Johnson and his entire family and team during this difficult time. Racing is a wonderful sport but there are always dangers lurking around the corner. Hopefully, there are more positive updates on the way.
