Prairie View A&M is forced to scheduled a new opponent for homecoming in 2025 after North American University decided to shutter its college football program earlier this week. The semi-controversial institute of higher learning has not fared well against FCS opponents in recent years.
It will never lose again!
The Tigers were supposed to host the Stallions in Texas on Oct. 25. It was going to be the HBCU program’s homecoming game, which is a very big deal. Most Historically Black College and Universities see a major spike in attendance on homecoming week. They typically play against a team that they know they can beat to give their fans a show.
In this instance, Prairie View A&M scheduled North American University. Previously known as Texas Gulf Institute, the university first received national attention in 2021 when it played a game on ESPN+ and became known as the new ‘Bishop Sycamore.’ Further digging into the school’s history revealed that the school was run by an alleged terrorist.
Nevertheless, the football team continued to exist on the NAIA level in the Sooner Athletic Conference. The NCAA actually ruled that any games played against North American University will not count toward an official record for an accredited school. It still managed to schedule multiple FCS opponents.
None of the games went well. They were all blowouts. Every single one.
The Stallions lost four-straight games by 275 points to begin last season, including a 90-7 loss against Division-III powerhouse Hardin-Simmons. Yikes.
At some point over the last three months, people with power at North American University sat down and took a good, hard look at the football team. They decided it is no longer necessary.
In a decision that comes with great difficulty and careful deliberation, North American University (NAU) announced the discontinuation of its football program. This move, supported by the Board of Trustees, reflects a strategic shift in the university’s investment toward areas that uphold and enhance NAU’s core mission.

Athletic director Kenneth Apande (who previously served as the head football coach) explained the decision. The Stallions will still compete in eight other sports.
This was a difficult decision, backed by the Board of Trustees, that aims to direct investment to the things that make North American University exceptional. Our goal is to still compete in the eight NAIA and USCAA sports that will remain an integral part of the NAU experience.

Needless to say, Prairie View A&M cannot play a team that does not exist. The Tigers will need to find a new opponent for its homecoming game in October!
