Texas Longhorns football fans got a glimpse into the future Tuesday as the program’s upcoming schedules were officially released – giving a look at what lies ahead for the Steve Sarkisian's program in the new SEC era of a nine-game schedule.
With the move from the Big 12 now firmly in the rearview mirror, the upcoming schedules for the 2026, 2027, 2028, and 2029 seasons highlight a mix of tradition, marquee matchups, and fresh rivalries. The Red River Shootout with Oklahoma remains in Dallas and is the schedule centerpiece. But, future slates feature heavyweight matchups with SEC powers Georgia, Alabama, and LSU – games which could have national championship implications.
For fans, Tuesday's release offers both anticipation and excitement as Texas continues its climb on the national stage and within the SEC. Longhorns fans will now have an opportunity to get out and about within the conference footprint for road trips to campuses and stadiums you don't get to see very often.
Although the opponents have been announced, the only dates known for the actual games will be announced for the 2026 season later this year in December. Next year's slate is an intriguing one, too. Outside of annual opponents Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and Arkansas, the Longhorns will face Florida, Mississippi State, and Ole Miss at DKR. Texas will hit the road to face off with LSU, Missouri, and Tennessee.
Speaking of the Volunteers, Texas has not played the charter member of the SEC since 1968. Even more fun, Texas has never played at Neyland Stadium.
As far as the non-conference Power 4 opponents go, next season the Ohio State Buckeyes will oblige and make a trip to Austin. In 2027, Texas will host Michigan, in 2028 the Longhorns will travel to South Bend to take on Notre Dame, and in 2029 the Fighting Irish will return the favor and come to Texas.
