In the world of professional sports, money-related feuds between teams and their players is an everyday thing. But every once in a while, nice gestures occur one way or the other.
This time, it was from the team whose stadium is right across the Dallas Cowboys' home in Arlington: The Texas Rangers. And Jerry Jones' team should learn from it.
According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, the Rangers paid starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi a $100,000 All-Star bonus in his contract despite not making the American League team this year.
The Rangers didn't have to pay it but did as a sign of gratitude given the standout season Eovaldi has had for the Rangers, which includes a 1.58 ERA over 91 innings pitched.
It's a classy move and one the Rangers organization should be applauded for. It was also a reminder to me—a Cowboys-obsessed writer 365 days a year—of what the Jones-led front office didn't do earlier this year.
Former Cowboys quarterback Cooper Rush had the possibility of earning a $250,000 incentive based on playing time leading up to the regular season finale, at which point the team decided to bench him for Trey Lance.
All year long, Rush was the established backup for Dak Prescott, whose season was cut short. Once Rush was forced to start, the Cowboys coaching staff sustained he was the best available quarterback on the team and consistently shut down any idea of Lance taking over the veteran.
Had Rush played 65 snaps in that game—not a given at all—he would've received the incentive.
Following the game, Jerry Jones disputed the notion the decision to switch quarterbacks was money related. And while there's no evidence to the contrary, it's only fair to point out the Cowboys could've recognized Rush's efforts by paying the $250,000 bonus that would've had minimal impact on the team's salary cap this year through an adjustment.
For many years, the Cowboys were happy to have Cooper Rush as backup quarterback as he posted a 9-5 record in games started.
