One Piece feels like it’s always happening, with the manga and anime running largely uninterrupted for well over two decades, save for a few short periods here and there where things have had to slow down or take a break. It looks like now is one of those periods, because the One Piece anime is going on hiatus for half a year.
Toei Animation has announced that the One Piece anime is going on a six-month hiatus, starting immediately following last Sunday’s airing of episode 1222. The series will stop airing new episodes until April 2025, something that fans are a little bit upset about — understandably so, given the manga will keep running and spoilers are likely to be abundant.
In its place, Toei – and Crunchyroll along with it – will be airing an abridged version of the Fish-Man Island Saga, which is said to have “enhanced contemporary visuals.” The remastered saga will feature updated opening and ending themes, and will be aired weekly starting on October 27, 2024. Crunchyroll will have all of these remastered episodes, as well as a 25th anniversary special called One Piece Fan Letter.
One Piece Fan Letter is a 30-minute episode showing the reunion of the Straw Hat crew following their two-year break after the Summit War in Sabaody Archipelago, told from the perspective of non-pirate characters. It looks quite charming, with a bouncy new animation style that is very appealing and quite unlike anything else we’ve seen in the series. One Piece Fan Letter will be available in October on both Crunchyroll and Netflix.
The delay comes after the announcement of a One Piece anime remake, called The One Piece. Little is known about the remade series, but it’s expected that it will feature an abridged storyline that cuts out much of the filler and padding that the current series has, instead sticking closely to the source material. It’s going to be animated by Spy x Family studio WIT, and it seems to be coming to Netflix exclusively at some point in the future.
