We’ve seen trolls in The Lord of the Rings before, but not like this.
The Rings Of Power season 2 is set to introduce what looks like the biggest troll of all when it starts streaming on Prime Video from 29 August.
As revealed by Empire in an exclusive image, the monstrous beast is a hill-troll, and it has a name: Damrod. “[He] was inspired in part by Mike Ehrmantraut in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul,” says showrunner Patrick McKay, “if you look at the way he moves and his casual sense of strength.”
To give you an idea of Damrod’s strength, one of his favourite meals is apparently dragon bones Benjamin Walker voices Damrod, suggesting that this brute isn’t an out-and-out antagonist like previous trolls we’ve seen in The Lord Of The Rings.
Where the cave troll in Peter Jackson’s The Fellowship Of The Ring only communicated in grunts, Damrod seems slightly more intelligent, with a personality that seems to be thoroughly disillusioned with life.
Although, characters will still have to watch themselves around him, however. If you zoom into the image you can see he has a belt with lots of skulls on.
Meanwhile, Andy Serkis teases cameos galore in Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.
The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power season 2 comes to Prime Video from 29 August.
