Witch Hat Atelier has been one of the most popular and well-received manga both in Japan and in the West since it first started in 2016. The magical series was announced to be getting an anime adaptation in 2022, but now we finally have our first look at it — and a release window.
Anime Expo 2024 is in full swing right now, and with it came a panel for Witch Hat Atelier. During that panel, a new teaser trailer was revealed for the anime adaptation of the series, a trailer that has since been uploaded by Crunchyroll, who will be distributing the anime outside of Japan when it’s released.
The trailer is absolutely gorgeous, showing a montage of idyllic locations and a fantastic art style that has to be seen to be believed. The upcoming series is being animated by Bug Films, an animation studio that’s most well-known for Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead, but has been a support animation studio for a range of different series, including Delicious in Dungeon, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, and Pokémon Horizons.
With Hat Atelier tells the story of a young girl called Coco who lives in a world of magic and longs to be magical herself, but sadly wasn’t born with the gift. A chance encounter changes her perspective, though, and the rest is history.
Here’s the official story description, courtesy of Kodansha:
In a world where everyone takes wonders like magic spells and dragons for granted, Coco is a girl with a simple dream: she wants to be a witch. But everybody knows magicians are born, not made, and Coco was not born with a gift for magic. Resigned to her un-magical life, Coco is about to give up on her dream to become a witch … until the day she meets Qifrey, a mysterious, traveling magician. After secretly seeing Qifrey perform magic in a way she’s never seen before, Coco soon learns what everybody “knows” might not be the truth, and discovers that her magical dream may not be as far away as it may seem …
Witch Hat Atelier will be available on Crunchyroll in 2025, and is likely to become one of the best anime on Crunchyroll once it does.
