On the heels of an epic offensive performance in their final regular season game of 2024, the Texas Tech Red Raiders have announced the firing of defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter and defensive passing game coordinator/secondary coach Marcel Yates.
Both coaches have been in Lubbock since the hiring of Joey McGuire in 2021.
Texas Tech beat West Virginia 52-15 on Saturday, finishing the regular season 8-4 and 6-3 in Big 12 play. Following the game, rumors were swirling about the future of DeRuyter with Tech.
DeRuyter's defensive scheme had its moments over the course of three seasons, but the 2024 campaign was incredibly inconsistent.
Perhaps no game showed this more than the Week 2 debacle at Washington State, where McGuire voiced his concerns with the defense after a 37-16 road loss.
"One of the biggest things we've got to do is play better defense. We've gotta set edges, we've gotta get off the field," McGuire said. "The first week we let a guy throw for 600 yards and then this last week we let a guy rush for 300 yards, 197 by the quarterback. We're 128th right now in the country in total defense, I think we're 120-something in 3rd down defense. We're allowing 7/10 touchdowns in the red zone.
"I think it has to start with that side of the ball. I know nobody believes that that wears red and black and the Double T, but it has to start with us getting better on defense."
DeRuyter and Yates both had one year remaining on their contracts. Keep it with Red Raider Review for more breaking news on Texas Tech's hunt for a new defensive coordinator.
