The Texas Tech Red Raiders baseball team is dealing with the arrest of freshman Jesse Rusinek. The 19-year-old was arrested early Monday morning on suspicion of driving while intoxicated with an open container of alcohol on campus.

On Wednesday, head coach Tim Tadlock spoke for the first time since the arrest, saying, “We’re trying to handle that internally, looking at everything there is to look at about it. And trying to support the young man also. He made a mistake. And we’re all very thankful nobody got hurt when he made the mistake.”

Jesse Rusinek was booked Monday into the Lubbock County Detention Center on a Class B misdemeanor count of driving while intoxicated with an open container of alcohol.

He was released later that day on a bond, according to jail records.

Rusinek is an outfielder and left-handed pitcher for the Red Raiders. He’s batting .435 with 1 home run, 7 runs batted in and 2 stolen bases. In two appearances on the mound, he’s 0-0 with a 6.75 earned-run average.

The Red Raiders were off this week, but are back home for a three-game series this weekend when they host Penn State. First pitch is at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, followed by a 2:00 p.m. Saturday game and 1:00 p.m. Sunday first pitch.
