Hopkins hosted Wayzata in a high-level matchup between two of the best boys' basketball teams in the state Thursday, but an unsavory ending at Hopkins High School wound up being the story of the night.
The game came down to the wire. Highly touted Wayzata junior guard Christian Wiggins led all scorers with 33 points, but it was not enough as Hopkins came out on top 77-76.
The crowd was growing restless for much of the night due to a series of perceived questionable calls from the officials. Wayzata's Wyatt McBeth missed a potential game-winning shot late in the game, but it looked like there could've been a foul.
Wayzata head coach Bryan Schnettler did not agree with the no-call and proceeded to react demonstratively, which prompted even more reaction from the crowd.
After the clock hit zero, Wayzata's bench opted to not shake hands with Hopkins and then chaos ensued. The Hopkins student section and the team followed Wayzata to their away locker room, which created the messy situation summed by below by CCX Media sports reporter Chaz Mootz.

Hopkins is the No. 2-ranked 4A team in the state and Wayzata is No. 4, according to MN Basketball Hub's latest rankings.
A meeting between two of the state's best teams was overshadowed by the behavior from the crowds and coaching. The two teams will likely meet again in their section's championship game later this year.
