In a shocking move, Mikey Matthews, the Ute's highly touted freshman wideout has revealed he will be transferring from the program.
On December 6th, Matthews announced his intent to turn the page of this stage in his career on X.
It is a rather baffling decision to fans and most likely the program as the Mission Viejo product played in every game this season. While he didn't necessarily make the biggest impact this season, not his fault regarding the circumstances, he still managed to be used in the passing, rushing, and even returning aspects of the game.
However, the most confusing aspect of his transfer intent is the fact that not only could he be the best wideout on the team next year, but he will also be accompanied by a much better quarterback in Cam Rising to feed him the ball. The prospects of him being the marquee target on arguably the best Big 12 team were still not enough for the four-star recruit to stay.
His name is added to the growing list of transfers out of the program yet this one in particular will hurt hard since it's in a position of desperate need for Coach Whittingham. The work continues for the Utes to beef up the reserves while also manufacturing a viable receiving corps for Cam Rising to work with so the program can not only challenge for the Big 12 title but also a spot in the 12-team playoff structure.
