As the NBA offseason approaches the beginning of September, the main headline continues to be the lack of moves by the Golden State Warriors.
Golden State has yet to make any moves in free agency this offseason to upgrade their roster around their star trio of Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green as they try to chase a championship next season.
Of course, this is mainly due to the ongoing saga between them and restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga who has reportedly turned down the Warriors’ contract offer.
While the Kuminga situation continues to play out, it has been reported that the Warriors do have multiple deals in place with free agents that are expected to be finalized once Kuminga’s situation is resolved.
Golden State has also recently emerged as a potential landing spot for sharpshooting forward Malik Beasley and CBS Sports’ Robby Kalland recently labeled them as a wild card team to sign him in free agency.
“They are expected to use their mid-level to sign Al Horford and De'Anthony Melton whenever the Kuminga situation is settled, and then bring back Gary Payton II, but they could also explore options to bring in Beasley, depending on the number he will command,” Kalland wrote. “Golden State is $25 million under the first apron, so even using their full mid-level they'd have room to add Beasley if able, either through the bi-annual exception, their $8.7 million trade exception or using a chunk of the mid-level on Beasley and acquiring Melton or Horford a different way. They already have Buddy Hield operating in the reserve shooting guard role, but the Warriors know as well as anyone that you can't have too much shooting on the roster.”
Of course, it would be difficult for the Warriors to sign Beasley along with the other players they reportedly already have deals done with, though it is not impossible.
Beasley is an elite three-point shooter who paired alongside Curry in the backcourt would create a new form of the Splash Brothers previously held by Curry and Klay Thompson.
Despite this, the Warriors could also elect to bring Beasley off the bench to give an offensive boost to their second unit potentially alongside Buddy Hield, who was Golden State’s second-best three-point shooter last season.
Either way, adding Beasley could end up being a great move for the Warriors that could help them become a contender next season, though adding the veteran guard could cost them some of their other targets due to financial reasons.
