Watch: 'Banana Ball' strikes again

When is it no longer cool to bring your own glove to a baseball game? If you're going to watch the Savannah Bananas play, the answer is never.

One fan proved that last night as he helped the Bananas beat their traveling opponent the Party Animals by catching a foul ball which, according to Rule 8 of "Banana Ball," is an out.

Now, some of you may be asking who the Savannah Bananas are and what the heck is Banana Ball.

Think of them as the Harlem Globetrotters of baseball. This season they're traveling across America with the Party Animals, and they literally play the game by their own rules (nine of them to be exact) intended to make the sport more fast-paced, entertaining and fan-engaging.

They do things like pitch from second base or on stilts.

They wear overalls on top of their uniforms and use them instead of their glove.

But their biggest claim to fame is their pre-pitch dance routines, designed to distract hitters before the ball is delivered.

The Savannah Bananas embody everything that low-level baseball should be about.

The games are fast with a two-hour time limit, ideal for families with young children or fans, in general, attending on a weeknight. The stakes are generally low, with the players focused on creating a fun atmosphere rather than grinding away in hopes of getting promoted.

They serve as a reminder of what makes many people fall in love with baseball in the first place: a summer night out at the ballpark with family or friends, watching adults play a kid's game with joy and passion.

So, even if you're a baseball purist who hates rules like the pitch clock and shift limitations, pack your glove and give The Bananas a shot.
