The Longhorns dropped four spots in ESPN’s Football Power Index (PFI) after their loss to Florida in The Swamp on Saturday. Texas’ postseason odds are now very slim, according to ESPN’s analytics.
At 3-2, Texas now sits at No. 8 in the FPI, with its projected record to be about 8-4. The analytics also give the Longhorns just a 3.2% chance to win out due to Texas yet to face ranked teams like Oklahoma, Vanderbilt, Georgia and Texas A&M.
On top of that, the Longhorns’ chances of reaching six wins have also decreased, as well as their odds of winning their conference. Considering the remaining games on Texas’ schedule, it’s looking unlikely that it will even make the SEC Championship Game.
However, the Longhorns aren’t completely unfavorable to the analytics; Texas still has about a 1/5 chance to make the playoffs with a 21.8% chance. Although it does only have a 3.3% chance of making the national championship.
The odds get even slimmer from there, as ESPN gives the Longhorns just a 1.5% chance to win the championship.
Now that the Longhorns have fallen victim to the Gators and are sitting at two losses, these analytics look more realistic than they have all season. However, nobody can trust them just yet, as Texas still controls its own destiny.
Up next for Texas: No. 6 Oklahoma in Dallas for the Red River Rivalry on Saturday.
