Iowa State has rounded out its men’s basketball coaching staff with the hire of former Bradley assistant coach Allan Hanson.

Along with Bradley four-star transfer guard Jaquan Johnson, now the Cyclones have secured a member of Brian Wardle’s coaching staff, too.

Hanson is the fifth and final hire of T.J. Otzelberger‘s support staff, following former staffer JR Blount’s jump to become the head coach at San Diego. As of 2023, the NCAA permits Division I coaches five assistant coaches.

Hanson comes to Ames, Iowa, from Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois, where he helped Wardle guide the Braves to a 21-13 season and a second-place finish in the Missouri Valley Conference. Before his lone season at Bradley, Hanson made stops at Southern Utah and Western Illinois.

Before his college coaching career, Hanson was the head boys’ hoops coach at Nicolet High School in Glendale, Wisconsin, from 2016 to 2022.

“Allan Hanson will be an incredible resource for the young men in our program,” Otzelberger said in a release. “He’s a competitor, proven winner and someone who takes tremendous pride in student-athletes realizing their potential. We look forward to him impacting our pressure defensive system as well as working with our point guards.”

Hanson, too, was a former point guard at Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Iowa State added two new guards in Johnson and Ryan Prather Jr. from Robert Morris via the transfer portal. Perhaps adding Hanson is another way for Otz to reinforce those additions, and having a coach familiar with Johnson from last season can’t hurt, right?
