The 29th edition of the Guinness Women’s Six Nations 2025 kicked of on Saturday 22nd March and will end on 26th April 2025. The Red Roses, England’s Women Rugby team and defending champions, have won 20 titles of the Tournament since its inception.

That’s the trend that coach and the new captain Zoe Aldcroft hope to continue with even as they go into the games. Other teams routing for the title are France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales.

On Sunday March 10th, 2025, the Roses hosted Italy at home in York where England started off on a right footing scoring 39-5 over the visitors. The two teams last played against each other at Stadio Sergio Lanfranchi in Parma, where the Red Roses won 48-0.

The Red Roses have won the past six editions in a row. Italy finished second in 2019 but has regressed to fifth position in each of the last three years.

On Sunday, in York, England had an upper hand in the first half managing to score five tries before half time. England got its first try five minutes into the game and proceeded to convert. By the ninth minute England was dominating at 14-0 with another try and conversion. Lucy Packer of England was penalised for a knock-on at the twenty-fourth minute. Thirty minutes into the game, Rose Galligan managed a try which was disallowed for a knock-on and a penalty try was awarded. Guroli, Italy No2 was yellow carded. Soon after, England through a penalty managed to push for another try.

In the second half England managed just one try, as Italy gained momentum stepping up their game while managing to slowdown the English team.

“I think it was a great match. We played very well, I normally don’t like to overthink, every moment is big enough, so I live in the moment. Today I was taking every moment as it comes,” said English player Lilli Ives Campion.

The squads

John Mitchell presented a 37-player squad – consisting of 21 forwards and 16 backs. Zoe Aldcroft takes over from Marlie Packer, as captain. World player of the year Ellie Kildunne is a keystone in the team.

Uncapped players amongst the troop are Abi Burton, Charlotte Fray, Flo Robinson and Jade Shekells.

The Azzure has a new head coach Fabio Roselli who is taking over from Giovanni Raineri. Fabio named a squad of 30 players for the 29th edition of Guinness Women’s Six Nations. The team remained largely unchanged with Elisa Giordano continuing as Captain. “Really exited to start off, and what a start, playing against the first team in the world and in the six Nations, a big tournament. Really exited,” said Fabio Roselli, the Italian coach in the post match press conference on Instagram.
