5 ASU women’s golfers will compete in Paris 2024 Olympics for 4 different countries
John Jones-USA TODAY Sports

With some of the sports and competitions drawing to a close at the Paris 2024 Olympics, women’s golf is just about to start and ASU will have the most representatives (5) than any other program in the tournament.

From August 7-10 at Le Golf National, Carlota Ciganda and Azahara Munoz (Spain), Linn Grant (Sweden), Alessandra Fanali (Italy) and Alexandra Forsterling (Germany) will all turn from golfers with Sun Devils connections to international foes. Both the Spaniards Ciganda and Munoz are going to be in their third Olympics while Fanali, Grant and Forsterling will make their Olympic debuts.

“We could not be more proud to have five fantastic golfers representing our program,” Sun Devil women’s golf head coach Missy Farr-Kaye said according to a press release. “They have all worked so hard and are an excellent example of what can be achieved at Arizona State.”

As a freshman, Ciganda was a member of the Sun Devils’ 2009 NCAA championship program. She made Pac-10 history as the first to win back-to-back conference championships in 2009 and 2010.

Munoz, an ASU grad in psychology, was the 2008 NCAA Individual Champion as a junior, a teammate of Ciganda’s on the 2009 title-winning team, a 2006-09 First-Team All-Pac-10, 2006-07 NGCA Second-Team All-American and 2009 NGCA All-American.

Grant, Fanali and Forsterling were all teammates from 2019-21 before Grant turned pro following her second season. Fanili and Fosterling played all four years (2018-22) of college together at Arizona State.

Seeing the amount of talent that ASU has produced, Farr-Kaye credits the recruitment and development from ASU to get these players to where they are today.

“Having the most Olympic golfers of any program is a tremendous accomplishment for Arizona State,” Farr-Kaye said. “It shows that the efforts that we have made in identifying and developing the top student-athletes in the World have paid off.”

Arizona State is ahead of UCLA (4) and Duke (3) with the most women’s golfers who played collegiately at their respective schools. Sun Devil women’s golf is also tied with men’s swimming for the most current or former athletes from Arizona State in one sport this year.

Here are all of the times each Sun Devil golfer will tee off on Aug. 7.
