'A Lot of Fun': Bryson DeChambeau Thriving in Conditions That Reward Aggressive Play

Bryson DeChambeau is dominating LIV Golf South Africa, and he says it’s because the course is a perfect fit. Holding a solo lead at 21-under, DeChambeau explained exactly why the high-altitude, driver-heavy layout lets him thrive.

Speaking during the LIV Golf South Africa press conference on Saturday, DeChambeau explained how the layout has influenced his approach and scoring opportunities, saying:

“I like the driver holes. I think they’re a lot of fun. They provide a lot of variability and sometimes chaos, but then the opportunity to make an eagle, right, like I did today and I did yesterday on 1.”

The 2026 LIV Golf Singapore winner followed opening rounds of 63 and 65 with a 7-under 64 on Saturday, which included two eagles. That performance has given him a two-shot advantage heading into Sunday.

“So I think all in all, it’s really a treat to play at elevation, have some drivable holes, be able to hit it 350, 360 on some holes, and be able to hit your pitching wedge 190. It’s a lot of fun.”

Across 54 holes, DeChambeau has taken advantage of key par 4s, especially the 1st and 5th holes, where he is a combined 8-under for the week.

During his third round of 64, he added to that with a stretch that included two birdies and two eagles within the first 10 holes.

With one round remaining, he is in position to secure consecutive wins, following his playoff victory at LIV Golf Singapore.

How The Conditions Have Helped DeChambeau

The Club at Steyn City is an 18-hole course in Midrand, Johannesburg. It was designed by Jack Nicklaus and opened in 2014.

At the same time, the conditions have also contributed to scoring across the field. The altitude has allowed the ball to travel farther, which has opened up more reachable positions. As a result, several holes have played shorter than their listed yardage.

This was evident on Saturday, where multiple players completed rounds without a bogey, and the overall scoring average remained low.
