It is not unusual for players to change their caddies. Changes are fairly common on and off-season. Sometimes, there is a match made in heaven between player and caddie. For long-time matchups, there is a great amount of trust between the two, like with Rory McIlroy and Henry Diamond. This week, one player is already showing his new partner in his career. During the Hero World Challenge, Akshay Bhatia rolled up with a new caddie. This veteran caddie is Joe Greiner, who has the tools that Bhatia needs for his career.
During 2025, Greiner had several players he caddied for. Previously, he was Max Homa’s caddie for six years until this past March. It just so happened that around the time of the Master’s Tournament, Justin Thomas’ caddie was sidelined due to an injury, so he stepped up for Thomas. For the RBC Heritage, Greiner was paired with Collin Morikawa. Then, during the FedEx St. Jude Championship, he was paired with Jake Knapp. That one looked like it would last through the next season, but it was not in the cards for the two. Now Greiner is with Akshay Bhatia. Greiner has reached out to Golfweek to confirm the partnership. As well as his intentions to stick with him through the 2026 season.
Greiner has quite a lot to offer with his experience with Max Homa alone. He is also a stable choice for Bhatia. The tournament the two are participating in will also give them a chance to learn how they work together. As well as giving fans an idea of what to expect for the next season. Now, why does Bhatia need a new caddie?
In 2025, Bhatia was working with Brian Dilley. The reason why the position opened was that Dilley left the PGA Tour in favor of working with David Puig on LIV Golf. Being Bhatia’s caddie is a fairly desirable position, too. He has two PGA wins under his belt since he joined the league in 2023. He currently stands in the top 50 on the OWGR, 43rd at the time of writing. Bhatia also finished the FedEx Cup at T13. All that, as well as having a Tournament winner exemption through 2027. He is pretty young too, at only 23, he has more than a few years in his career. If Greiner sticks with Bhatia, he can expect some stable work for at least two years.
2026 is already going to be a season of big changes. The memberships have been lowered, the current CEO is talking about schedule changes, and pace-of-play measures are being solidified. Changes are even happening on the player level, aside from the ones affected by the membership cuts; big names like Tiger Woods are finding themselves at a crossroads in their careers. For now, though, fans will get a taste of what a Bhatia and Greiner pairing will be like during the Hero World Challenge.
